I’m participating in an OpenIDEO initiative that asks the question, “How might we reimagine the end-of-life experience for ourselves and our loved ones? IDEO is a design and innovation consulting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area. The challenge runs through July in collaboration with Sutter Health, Ungerleider Fund and HELIX Centre.
Thought leaders from around the world are participating in this challenge. Phase One was the Inspiration phase. 361 inspirations were shared. Phase Two was the Idea phase. 303 Final ideas were submitted. Currently underway is the Feedback phase. From this phase, a shortlist will be selected to take ideas further into development.
It’s fascinating to read the ideas, share comments with other contributors and learn from each other. It’s been fun communicating with participants from Tel Aviv, Uganda, the UK and the US and gaining an understand of cultural nuances and practical application from different perspectives.
As a “learner”, engaging in an initiative like this inspires me. Our lives are precious. How we live them is a unique expression of us. Knowing how much we do on “auto-pilot” spurs me to curiosity and ask questions. Living in China and traveling throughout the world taught me that concepts we hold dear and understandable may be “simple” for some and complex or misunderstood by others. Finding the baseline (beliefs about practical planning) and getting to the “root” (why people do this easily or avoid it) is something I strive to achieve personally and through my work at The Living Planner.
I’d like to ask for your thoughts and share with you the ideas I submitted to this challenge. What motivates you to take action? What holds you back from taking action? Replacing upset with relief is a goal I have for The Living Planner. How may we do this more effectively in ways that you desire? The links to my challenge submissions are below.
