Freedom

In 1775, residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American Colonies and the Colonial Government entered into the American Revolution.   France entered into this war in 1778 to help the North American Colonists, turning this into an international conflict.  In 1781, with the help of the French, the Colonists forced the British into surrender, although the fighting would continue until 1783.

In 1774, the North American Colonies met in what was called the Continental Congress to begin exploring Independence.   In 1775-1776, the Second Continental Congress meeting was held.  By this time, the Colonists had formed a Continental Army to fight for freedom and independence.  In March, 1776, the British evacuated to Canada and in June, 1776, a majority of the Colonists wanted separation from the Colonial Government.  On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence.  Freedom from the Colonial Government was secured and Americans now celebrate July 4th as Independence Day.

What strikes me about our history is that the decision was made in 1776, while the fighting continued until 1783.  Seven years from the decision to finalization!  When we make a decision, how long does it take to implement?  There seems to be a resemblance to life today, doesn’t there?

In life and in business, how often do we notice a delay in implementation of a decision?  Action may be underway, yet we may have multiple variables to consider prior to implementation.  OR, we may complete a phase/stage and come to realize that adjustments are needed.

“Once and done” is a phrase we long to hear!  Over time, I’ve come to realize that most of life is a “once and done; to be continued as needed!”  Today as we prepare to celebrate the birthday of our freedom on Independence Day, I encourage you to take a look at decisions concerning your life, your business, your plans, your wishes, your legacy and ask yourself, “Is everything up to date?  Is everything I decided before still what I desire today?  Are there tweaks that are needed to reflect the current environment?”

We have freedom, choice and access to resources that are not found throughout the world.  Celebrate the freedom, liberties and independence we have from sea to shining sea!  Decide, Act, Implement with the thought that “rinse and repeat” is helpful over the course of our lives.
