Skills: Practice, Practice, Practice

Throughout life, we are presented with new experiences, new tasks and new learning.  We learn to study/learn in school; when we buy our first car or house we learn about negotiation; when we seek a job we learn what it takes to find employment; to maintain a job we learn about leadership, teamwork, organization, time management and more!  Throughout life we navigate conflict resolution, stress management and problem solving.

What these skills have in common is the ability to think, to learn and adapt.  Situations change, how we adapt is a skill that serves us throughout life.  Often times we are thrown into life.  Uncharted territory looms and we are faced with many questions.  Our previous experiences often dictate our responses.  While we hear that “practice makes perfect”, how do we practice for something unexpected?

Sharpening our skill set begins with focus on certain skills to serve you in life.

  1. Seeing the situation for what it really is
  2. Noticing the big picture and paying attention to the details
  3. Consideration of various options available to you
  4. Taking in the options and making decisions
  5. Being willing to take risks – try something previously unfamiliar
  6. Taking action on the decisions made
  7. Securing help from others
  8. Ability to regroup
  9. Emotional intelligence

These skill-sets are invaluable in all stages of life.  Practice seeing the big picture and the little things involved in the big picture.

Even with practice, there are times when we are taken aback.  I received news this morning that a dear woman I worked with in Montreal died last night.  She bravely lived through numerous cancer diagnoses and treatments were not able to help her on this last on slot of tumors.  I write this post with a heavy heart because I will miss her.  She encouraged me my first day in Montreal and has kept in touch ever since.  We laughed at our past experiences with shared colleagues and celebrated the goodness in life.  Her spirit, attitude and joie de vivre was contagious.

Take a minute to breathe deeply and enjoy this moment.  May we have many of these moments in the future.
