Artificial Intelligence enters into the scene as technology advancements abound. For example, Apple recently discussed upcoming Safari enhancements to note. “Intelligent tracking prevention” in the Safari web browser will stop adverts from following users around the web. New artificial intelligence technologies will process personal data on the iPhone, instead of being sent to remote servers. Voice commands being processed by Siri on the HomePod speaker will be stripped of any personal identifying information, and use encryption.
Back in March, 2017, Congress voted to repeal privacy measures that would that would stop internet service providers from sharing their users’ internet activity with third parties. A number of sources recommended the use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for people/businesses to limit giving up information. There is a caveat to this recommendation – how do you trust your information is not sold or your bandwidth is not used as a part of a botnet?
Experts admit it is difficult to understand vague information relayed in an attempt to “sell us”. Read the Terms of Service carefully and ask questions before you sign on the dotted line. A good VPN will also protect you from malware on public networks, but not every service is up to the task.
It is possible today to set-up your own VPN server and connect to it. I know I am not technically competent on my own to handle this! The good news is that we can pay attention to the sites we visit. When we see https:// these sites limit the amount of information that your internet service provider (ISP) can see. For example, the individual pages we visit or the information we send is not seen.
Technology is our friend and an opportunity for those who seek it. Take time and care with sensitive information. Educate yourself and/or make sure you have a team looking out for your interests. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” when it comes to personal and company information/data. Be vigilant and take steps to have a Plan B!
