Starting from Scratch

It is humbling to watch the power of a hurricane.  This weekend, we see evidence of this with Hurricane Harvey in Texas.  This hurricane grew to a Cat 4 as it slammed into the east Texas coast.  It’s continuing impact is reeking havoc due to the deluge of rain and continuing winds.  Watching the coverage of this event, we see homes and businesses leveled – contents inside held now in the memory of the owners.

For these owners, starting from scratch is a now reality.   The origin of this phrase Scratch has been known since the middle of the eighteenth century as a sporting term for a line scratched on the ground that acted as a boundary line or starting point. The first example in the Oxford English Dictionary actually relates to cricket and indicated the crease, the line drawn in front of the stumps where the batsman stands.

To start from scratch is to begin from the beginning, to set out on some action or process without any prior preparation, knowledge or advantage. For many fleeing a natural disaster, the only preparation was survival they had was to get to safety NOW.  Returning after a disaster, caution is urged to be alert to downed power lines, fallen objects, avoid driving in flooded streets, and be alert to weakened walls, gas lines, structures, bridges, sidewalks, etc.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) provides valuable tips and assistance for those impacted by a natural disaster. To plan ahead, their link is:  Plan Ahead for Disasters  For individual disaster assistance, check this FEMA Individual Disaster Assistance.

The process of rebuilding takes time and involves many.  Seek assistance, solutions and comfort from those on the ground providing guidance and help.
