If you were away from work

We rely on schedules in daily life.   The busier we get, the juggling between activities occurs naturally, living a life of its own?!  Alas, we rely on routines, patterns of behavior, actions and responses to help us manage everything we do.  Think stimulus/response …

Auto-pilot can be helpful  – the less we have to think, the less stress we may feel.  A major difference in our routine can cause chaos for individuals.  New situations create the need for new thoughts and decisions.

We discuss protection strategies frequently in this blog.  Why is this?  To bring awareness, which provides an opportunity for thoughts and decisions in advance of you needing them.

This week, the topic is “what if you were away from work?”  Let’s add a caveat – for 60-90 days … what would the impact be to you, your family, your business?

“Impact” is a general term, isn’t it?  If you were traveling on a planned trip, there might be a flurry of activity to arrange for people to back you up at work, ensure your financial responsibilities are met, an attempt to think through as much as you can to create if-then scenarios and cover them.  Every preparation taken was toward a known end – a sabbatical, a work assignment, a vacation – each something known.

Now consider if the reason you would be away was a diagnosis, an accident, a situation that demanded your immediate attention without warning.  The impact is profoundly different.  This scenario may be unknown by you.  Your command of what to do, who to call, how to respond may be limited.

The percentage of companies, small businesses or families that consider and plan for contingencies in the US is small – around two in ten.  I’ve seen recent statistics that state eight in ten workers say that being away from work for up to 90 days would be either “difficult or a major crisis”.  The ripple effect is tremendous …

How to face this with solid resources and commitment is possible.  Integrating curiosity, compassion, layperson terms and a bit of humor is how we strive to do it.  We consider metrics, gathering statistics to understand the impact.  Consideration of the outcome in advance is a helpful tool for scenario review.
