What a week! In today’s post, we will concentrate on three specific issues of growing importance impacting people of all ages. Privacy, personal data and protection of your personal information.
Security issues have been in the forefront after massive security breaches impacting our identities which in turn effects our ability to file/obtain taxes, secure finances and live “normal” lives. This extends beyond our personal lives when businesses are active online and use social media tools and apps. Cyber Security / Data Security is vital in today’s day to day activities.
We learned this month that Medicare will be updating and sending out new Identification Cards in April, 2018. Why? Previously Medicare used our social security numbers as “ID numbers”. To reduce the potential for identity theft and fraud, Medicare will remove social security numbers from their cards. Medicare will send out these new cards in phases, based upon geography. For additional information about when your area may expect to receive new cards, here is the website for the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with details: New Medicare Cards 2018
Facebook news this week revealed how Cambridge Analytical obtained and used data from apps enjoyed by many through Facebook to target users. I always wondered about playing those games on Facebook!! We know now that our data is used and sold to third parties interested in learning more about us. Do you know how many companies Facebook owns? Facebook has acquired 66 (yes sixty six!) companies to date, the largest being WhatsApp Messenger. Another popular company acquired by Facebook is Instagram. Not many of us read the “Terms” when we click “yes” to join a site. Pay attention to what you’re authorizing.
If you find this concerning, you may wish to consider reducing exposure. CNN Tech contributor Sara Ashley O’Brien took a look at her 14 years of Facebook data to learn what was exposed and determine her next steps. If you are interested in the same exercise, here is a link to what she found: What data is stored?
As we seek ways to obtain additional information, technology makes it easy. Technology also exposes us. Be alert and aware as you make informed decisions about your use of tools and your exposure moving forward.
