Picture this – a beautiful sunny, warm Southern California late afternoon. Sitting outside with a client, we were talking about life, business, families. Out of the blue, I was asked “Why do you do what you do? It’s like having a root canal”! Laughter bubbled out of me as I replied, “I guess it makes sense, dad was a dentist”!
So much irony for me in this interaction 🙂 Yes, my dad was a dentist and since starting The Living Planner, I’ve thought often of how people resisted going to dad (the dentist) and how happy they were after completing the process. It is similar to what my clients say when we work together.
There are so many reasons to avoid me – trepidation/avoidance about the whole topic, “no time”, “competing priorities for resources”, “there’s plenty of time”, unfamiliarity with the “lingo” used by professionals, “hadn’t thought about it”, “let someone else handle it”, “what does it matter”, bringing what is unwanted to them by addressing it, “we’ve done things”, “it will work itself out”, etc. etc. People, families, workers and businesses matter in this world. Expecting the best and preparing for the worst has yet to take “center stage” in life.
Proactively addressing the components of life and business matters to me. Why? I’ve seen the impact of inaction, of lack of preparation and have seen the fall out financially, emotionally and physically when people and businesses don’t. It stinks. It’s avoidable and it is completely doable. Perhaps it’s easier for people and companies to avoid the topic “in the moment”.
A root canal is performed to repair and save a tooth. Perhaps it’s worth considering an up-front investment of time and resources to consider the components of life/business and take action through proactive preparation? That question is up to you.
Loved having the honest discussion with my client this week. Seeing the world through your eyes is important to me. Helping you see the world through the eyes of what’s possible and prudent is what I love to do.
