Watching from afar how the levee broke in Davenport, Iowa this week was personal – I grew up across the bridge in Moline, Illinois. My dad was born in Davenport. The “East Village” in Davenport is “hip” with shops and restaurants lining the streets. The Mississippi River couldn’t be contained this time – and boom, the “mighty Mississippi” proved to be a force we all watched on the national news.
It was difficult to watch the impact to the local downtown – were the people and businesses prepared for this? Are we ever really prepared for the twists and turns throughout life?
The twists and turns we experience throughout life occur personally and in business. This week I’ve worked with a young family expecting their first child, two business owners who’ve yet to formalize their partnership and a young woman who was suddenly thrust into trust administration after her grandfather’s death. Each of these interactions was about the journey – beginning, middle and end. Each involve combining personal and work issues. This is the journey of life!
There are several lessons we learn during the journey of life. Here are a few to ponder.
- We face things beyond our control throughout life. We can react or respond
- The intricacies of any situation can be complex
- Emotions and logic co-exist
- Consider the big picture – what’s at stake and what is the desired result
- Do you have what you need to act
- Are you willing to ask for help and accept it
- Chunk it down into small steps – we can only do so much
- Believe you can do what’s in front of you …
Here are a couple quotes that may help:
“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” -A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
As an advocate for proactive action, I realize we can only do what we can do, when we’re ready to do it. My experiences have shaped me and my desire to work with people to consider the practical side of preparation at home and in business.
If I could, I would ensure people approach this before needed! If you’re someone ready to consider what’s at stake for you, your family or your workplace, let’s talk. I’ve got some tools in my toolkit for you 🙂
