Planting a seed is an analogy for me to remember that results take time. After planting, variables such as water, temperature, sunlight and soil all come into play into forming the results.
When we consider considering life’s “administrative” side, let’s consider reasons why this is important.
- It’s difficult making decisions about someone or for someone when you don’t know their preferences or wishes. Even when we do know, it’s hard. Easing the burden for you and for others is a strong motivation.
- Privacy issues come into play for adults over the age of 18 concerning health issues. If permission has not been authorized by the patient, information sharing is a “no-no”.
- If life is interrupted and there are no executed legal documents, state laws may prohibit others from making medical decisions, taking care of financial obligations or handling business commitments.
Next, let’s consider who is impacted when no action has been taken.
- You. If others do not have the ability to help you if the time comes you really need help, you leave yourself at risk.
- Those you love. When your loved ones are not informed about the administrative details of your life, they are at risk of difficult days ahead without access to information, accounts, life style and cash flow.
- Those who depend upon you at work. Business owners put their associates, employees, clients and vendors at risk. Companies also face the risk of losing “institutional memory”, client retention and operational interruption.
Have you begun planting the seeds of life’s “administrative side”? If not, why not? If so, have you taken a look in the past three-five years of what you have done?
State and national laws change. It’s important to understand what’s at risk and what’s to gain by having up to date plans taking into consideration current rules your state adheres to. Knowing questions to ask of accountants, estate planning attorneys, financial planners, insurance agents, physians, tax people and more help you determine how best to proceed for your individual circumstances.
If you’re willing to plant, water and grow all that’s needed to get you ready for anything life hands you, it would be an honor to map out steps we can take care of while we are living to make life just a little easier for those we leave behind.
