Leadership and Adaptability

Leadership and adaptability comes into play in our personal and professional lives. Think about it, many of the same skills discussed in leadership or adaptability articles are in practice every day at home or work.

After reading two articles this week, I want to share key points for you to ponder over the Labor Day weekend! The first article (Fast Company) addressed leadership and how vulnerability develops strength as a leader and the second article (Korn Ferry) discussed adaptability competency.

In the Fast Company article, Seth Kaufman references Servant Leadership and how a boss he had at PepsiCo modeled this for him. It was here that he learned the idea that “leaders should serve, rather than be served; that they should set the vision and strategy and then work tirelessly to remove the barriers that get in the way of achieving that vision and strategy; and that they should lead by listening and giving support, rather than telling employees what to do.

This leads to strong loyalty and connection with your team.” My caveat for your consideration is to consider this for your home and work life.

Key to Connecting is Vulnerability

  • Connect with your vulnerability is about knowing you are human and that others are too. Creating a work environment (culture) is a big job Create a work environment (culture) where honesty, support, connection and communication thrives throughout fosters a solid working environment and adds a positive impact to the bottom line
  • Outline the vision, mission, goals and long-term plan; plus living the words put to paper clearly for all reinforcing the principles
  • Know your strengths and play to them
  • Practice synergy. Asking questions and listening to differing ideas allows leaders to continue to lead and learn simultaneously
  • Remove outdated practices and policies at work and update how you operate at home too
  • Stay on top of trends, competition, IT, pricing and business models. Times are changing quickly – stay nimble!

Adaptability

Adjustments come in a variety of ways. Adaptation and adjustment can go hand in hand. Think of mapping out a route for a road trip. During the journey, if you encounter a blocked road, an accident or incident what do you do?

Flexibility to handle change, juggle multiple responsibilities and adapt to the changes around us is a choice we face most days. In extreme situations, this flexibility and adaptability allows you to meet the challenges encountered and “get through it”.

Being adaptable means you’re less emotionally triggered by unexpected events. When a problem arises, you don’t dwell on how difficult it is, but rather quickly shift to search for solutions.
