In or Out of the Sand?

Let’s have some fun today! Are you a person with your head in or out of the sand in life?!

What is the Origin of the Phrase “Bury Your Head in the Sand”?

This comes from the supposed habit of ostriches hiding when faced with attack by predators. The story was first recorded by the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, who suggested that ostriches hide their heads in bushes. Ostriches don’t hide, either in bushes or sand, although they do sometimes lie on the ground to make themselves inconspicuous. The ‘burying their head in the sand’ myth is likely to have originated from people observing them lowering their heads when feeding.

The story continues that the ostrich believes that if it can’t see its attacker then the attacker can’t see it. They think they are safe from harm, if they cannot see the danger.

The saying is now used to describe any situation when human may desire to close your mind and hide from what you fear or desire to avoid. There are a few ways to get beyond fear and avoidance and take action!

Take Positive Steps

My suspicion is that we all have areas in our lives we would prefer to avoid or scare us. When you know this, it’s easier to take positive steps toward overcoming fear and avoidance.

Here are three steps to help you begin!

1. identifying what’s holding you back (Awareness is key)

2. follow through with actions to face what you fear (Purposeful Action helps)

3. make time for what you truly enjoy (Relaxation can help you muster up the courage to begin)!

So often we stop ourselves before we begin. Our minds are powerful. It is indeed possible to address that which you fear or prefer to avoid and come out the other side 🙂

Tackling Topics We Would Prefer to Avoid

  • What is important for me to do now?
  • How do I stop myself from following through?
  • Is it true?
  • How does it serve me?
  • What is the first step I can take?
  • How will I feel after I’m finished?

The mind can hold us back or allow us to soar!

Craft Your Game Plan

Believe me, I know how what I talk about is much feared and avoided! Yet, my experiences with people and businesses avoiding the advance planning/preparation is devastating when the unthinkable happens. In the emotion of the moment knowing where to start, what to do and how to proceed is difficult.

When things are settled before needed, there is a sense of relief and comfort amidst the emotion. Getting started is often the most difficult step.

Finding ways to make this easier for you to take care of the “necessary” recommended actions is my forte. Before Q4 begins in two weeks, let’s get you ready to close out the year strong!
