After years of leading global workplace teams, the experience personally of staff interruption due to illness, accident, incapacity and/or death has led me to explore the impact of these events to workplace productivity.  I am seeking to explore this theory and seek to obtain research of the cost to companies from absenteeism and presenteeism (at work, yet not engaged) that may exist in the US.  Preliminary research has revealed that the UK and Canada have led the charge in studies of wellbeing in the workplace, yet to date there are few studies documented in the US which begs the question, what is the impact to companies in the US?

Initiating research to the impact currently experienced by US companies begins by defining a “life event”.   For the purposes of this discussion, a “life event” is defined as an illness, accident, incapacity and/or death of the employee or family member of an employee.

Is there indeed an impact to US companies that accidents, illness, incapacity and/or death to individuals that your company has experienced?  Has there been a link in your company to absenteeism or presenteeism because of life events?  Have you considered measuring the costs to your company?   How are your workers meeting the co-existing demands of home and work life in your workplace?
