Lessons about Living

Today, this post features the commencement key note speech given by Sheryl Sandberg at UC Berkeley this month, for the graduating class of 2016.  She was poignant in prefacing this speech by saying, “I’m sharing this with you today in the hopes that on this day in your lives, with all the momentum and joy, you can learn in life the lessons that I only learned in death. Lessons about hope, about strength and about the light within us that will not be extinguished.”

While we may prefer to avoid speaking about death, about illness, about accidents, Ms. Sandberg’s reflections about the lessons she has gained through the loss of her husband struck a chord for many.  For me, these reflections highlight how often we go through life living on “auto pilot” and are a reminder to live life consciously each day recognizing what a gift we have in the present.

Lessons come to us in many ways.  May you pause for a moment and give thanks for this day.  The link to commencement address is contained at the bottom of the attached from UC Berkeley.
