I’ve been posting the 12 Days of Christmas on social media this season. Each day, I’ve posted a “quick tip” about daily life and preparedness. I’m sharing each of the 12 Days here to help you get into preparedness mode as we approach year-end!

12 Days of Christmas: Daily Life Preparedness Series
Day 1: Communication Networks
🎄 On the first day of preparedness, give yourself peace of mind: a strong communication network. Your circle of care matters more than you think.
Today, take a moment to identify 3-5 people who could check on you (and you on them) during life’s unexpected moments—whether it’s a power outage, a health concern, or just a challenging day.
💡 Simple step: Add these contacts to your phone favorites and share your emergency contact info with them too. Connection isn’t just comfort—it’s your first line of support. Who’s in your circle? 💚
Day 2: Essential Documents
🎄 On the second day of preparedness, organize what matters most: your essential documents.
Imagine needing your insurance card, birth certificate, or medical records right now. Could you find them in 60 seconds? Peace of mind starts with knowing where your vital papers live.
💡 Simple step: Create one designated spot (a folder, binder, or fireproof box) for documents like IDs, insurance policies, medical records, and important certificates. Bonus points for making digital copies! When life gets complicated, simplicity saves the day. ✨
Day 3: Financial Resilience
🎄 On the third day of preparedness, build your foundation: financial resilience.
You don’t need perfection—you need progress. Even a small emergency fund or knowing where your account information lives can transform a crisis into a manageable moment.
💡 Simple step: Start with $25 if that’s what you have. Know your bank’s customer service number. Keep a list of your accounts in a secure place. Small actions create big security. Financial preparedness isn’t about wealth—it’s about wisdom. 💪
Day 4: Home Comfort Basics
🎄 On the fourth day of preparedness, create your sanctuary: home comfort basics.
A flashlight. Fresh batteries. A cozy blanket. Candles. Sometimes the simplest items bring the greatest comfort when the unexpected happens—whether it’s a storm, a power outage, or just a difficult day.
💡 Simple step: Gather your comfort essentials in one accessible spot. Include items that make you feel safe and calm. Your home should be your refuge, even when things go dark. Preparedness is self-care in action. 🕯️
Day 5: Healthcare Facilities
🎄 On the fifth day of preparedness, know your lifelines: healthcare facilities near you.
When health concerns arise, every minute matters. Do you know which hospital is closest? Which urgent care centers accept your insurance? Where the nearest rehab or skilled care facility is located?
💡 Simple step: Create a quick reference list with addresses, phone numbers, and insurance network status for hospitals, urgent care, skilled nursing, and rehab centers within 15 miles of home. Save it in your phone and share with family. Knowledge is the best medicine—right after actual medicine. 🏥
Day 6: Health & Medication Management
🎄 On the sixth day of preparedness, safeguard your wellbeing: health and medication management.
Your health information shouldn’t be a mystery—especially in moments that matter. Knowing your medications, dosages, allergies, and medical history empowers you and your caregivers.
💡 Simple step: Create a current list of medications (with dosages), known allergies, and major health conditions. Keep it with your essential documents and in your phone. Update your first aid kit while you’re at it! Taking care of future you starts with today’s preparation. 💊
Day 7: Digital Life Backup
🎄 On the seventh day of preparedness, protect what’s irreplaceable: your digital life.
Photos of loved ones. Important files. Access to accounts. These aren’t just data—they’re your memories, your work, your connections. They deserve protection.
💡 Simple step: Back up your phone photos to cloud storage or an external drive. Write down (yes, on paper!) your most important passwords or set up a password manager. Update recovery contact information for key accounts. Your digital life is your real life. Guard it well. 📱
Day 8: Home Maintenance Know-How
🎄 On the eighth day of preparedness, empower yourself: home maintenance knowledge.
Where’s your water shut-off valve? Your electrical panel? Knowing these basics transforms you from worried to capable when something goes wrong.
💡 Simple step: Take 15 minutes to locate your main water valve, gas shut-off (if applicable), and circuit breaker. Take photos and label them on your phone. Learn one simple repair skill—like fixing a running toilet or resetting a breaker. Confidence comes from knowledge, not perfection. 🔧
Day 9: Transportation Alternatives
🎄 On the ninth day of preparedness, stay mobile: transportation alternatives.
Life happens. Cars break down. Weather disrupts travel. Having a backup plan means you’re never truly stuck.
💡 Simple step: Research local transportation options—ride shares, public transit, taxi services, or neighbors who might help in a pinch. Save numbers in your phone. Know the route to walk to essentials if needed. Consider keeping some cash for emergencies. Flexibility is freedom. 🚗
Day 10: Pet & Dependent Care Plans
🎄 On the tenth day of preparedness, protect your whole family: pets and dependents.
Every member of your household—furry, feathered, or otherwise—deserves a plan. From kids to elderly parents to beloved pets, everyone needs consideration.
💡 Simple step: Identify backup caregivers for children, pets, or dependent adults. Keep supplies ready (pet food, special dietary needs, comfort items). Document care instructions, medications, and routines. Share this info with your backup caregivers. Love means planning for everyone under your roof. 🐾
Day 11: Protection Practices
🎄 On the eleventh day of preparedness, secure your legacy: insurance and legal documents.
Peace of mind isn’t just about today—it’s about knowing you’ve protected tomorrow. Insurance policies and legal documents are love letters to your future self and those you care about.
💡 Simple step: Review your insurance coverage (health, home, auto, life). Know what’s covered and what’s not. Ensure legal documents like wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives are current and accessible. Schedule updates if needed. Preparation is the ultimate act of care. 📋
Day 12: Community Connection & Giving
🎄 On the twelfth day of preparedness, discover the gift: community connection.
Here’s the beautiful truth—when you’re prepared, you’re not just ready for your own challenges. You’re ready to be someone else’s answered prayer. You can check on a neighbor. Share your flashlight. Offer a ride. Be the help.
💡 Simple step: Identify one way you can strengthen community bonds—join a neighborhood group, offer your skills, check on someone who lives alone. Preparedness multiplies when shared. We rise by lifting others. That’s the heart of The Living Planner. 💝
