I started the Advisory Perspective Series years ago to highlight people who are working with us to improve our lives. Today, I’d like to introduce you to DocuGuardian and its founders, Lori and David Selsberg, who graciously provided answers to questions I sent them!
To begin, here is a little bit about them and how DocuGuardian came to be.

Lori Selsberg is an attorney and accomplished business executive with deep expertise in SaaS, software development, and business transformation. Throughout her career, she has led go-to-market strategies, IT initiatives, and revenue-driving programs across both startups and Fortune 100 regulated environments. A founder and innovator at heart, Lori has consistently delivered impactful solutions across competitive markets and diverse industries.
Dave is a global operations leader and entrepreneur with extensive experience in building and scaling SaaS businesses across a variety of industries. Utilizing his expertise in operational efficiency, business improvement, transformation and business enhancement strategies, he has successfully founded, scaled and exited four companies. Dave’s successful operational leadership acumen spans from startups to regulated fortune 100 businesses.
DocuGuardian was born from a deeply personal moment. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, before vaccines were available, both Lori and her husband contracted the virus. As they faced uncertainty, one question loomed large: How would their daughters find everything they needed, legal documents, insurance policies, financial details, and even personal memories and keepsakes, if the worst happened? That experience led to the creation of a simple folder system, but it planted the seed for something greater.
Lori soon discovered that countless families share this same fear and lack a clear, secure way to manage and share critical information. That insight inspired DocuGuardian, a secure, intuitive digital platform that helps people organize, access, and preserve both essential documents and personal legacy content. More than just software, DocuGuardian is a promise: that no family should face confusion, stress, or loss of legacy when they need time to grieve and care for each other with clarity and peace of mind.
Shaped by early life lessons about the unpredictability of life, Lori is a passionate advocate for being proactive, not reactive, in personal life, business, and in legacy planning.
Now for the Q&A!
1. What do you enjoy about working with your clients?
While DocuGuardian is designed to be intuitive and self-guided, what I love most is knowing that we’re helping real people feel more prepared and at peace. Hearing from Members who say, “This is exactly what my family needed” or “I’ve been meaning to do this for years” reminds me that we’re solving a deeply emotional and practical problem and we are doing it with care.
2. How would you suggest a potential new client prepare for a first meeting?
Because our platform is member-led, there is generally not a first meeting. But if someone is just getting started, I recommend the new Member take some time to jot down where their important documents are currently stored (and there is a list of these items on the Member dashboard for ease of use), and more importantly, who should have access to them. That moment of reflection usually reveals the gaps DocuGuardian is built to close.
3. When someone agrees to become a client, what can they expect immediately? Over time?
Immediately, they’re welcomed into a secure, easy-to-navigate environment that guides them through storing and organizing everything from legal, financial and insurance content to personal wishes, family recipes, farewell messages, and more. Over time, Members receive helpful reminders, education, and access to new features, all designed to help them build a stronger, more complete legacy at their own pace.
4. What is your service philosophy?
Simplicity, security, and empathy. We believe legacy planning should feel empowering, not overwhelming. That’s why everything we design, whether it’s our dashboard or our designee sharing system, is built to make Members feel confident, cared for, and in control. At the heart of it all is peace of mind, both for Members and for their loved ones. When it’s done right, it delivers double the peace of mind.
5. What resources do you provide to assist “laypeople” with understanding what is being discussed?
Every section of DocuGuardian includes hover-over tooltips, plain-language explanations, and content-specific guidance to make the process approachable and clear. Our Learning Center offers supportive articles and videos that help Members not only navigate the platform, but understand what they’re storing and why it matters. We want this to feel not just like a conversation, but like a meaningful, positive thing you’re doing for yourself and for the people you care about most.
Bonus Question! If you were to relay one piece of advice to anyone reading this, what would it be?
Don’t wait. Life rarely gives us a heads-up, and emergencies don’t send calendar invites. The best time to get organized is before your family needs it. Legacy planning isn’t just about death; it’s an act of love, clarity, and responsibility for yourself and the people you care about most. And there’s real power in being proactive instead of reactive, bringing peace of mind, a sense of control, and the quiet confidence that you’ve taken care of what matters.
Thank you, Lori and David, for providing this invaluable service for life and end-of-life planning! To contact them or learn more, watch these videos and/or check out their website. How easy DocuGuardian is; DocuGuardian CEO Message; DocuGuardian Website.
Who Has Access to Your Important Documents?
You know what you do, where things are, and why you do what you do! If you need help, who else is in the loop? This is the question that trips many of us up. Who do we trust? Who would be willing to help? How do I provide them with the information that is needed securely and safely?
Deciding what’s important and why it’s important can be overwhelming. That’s where I come in!
