Financial literacy, financial comfort, financial understanding – all concepts of extreme importance. Learning about finances often comes in spurts throughout our lives, due to access and opportunity.
Teaching students help kids understand the difference between earning, spending and saving, making them better money managers who’re able to budget. It also helps kids understand the value of money at an early age and help them make better financial decisions.
Today, I introduce you to a woman I’ve met who has taken her life lessons and developed methods from her educational background to educate youth about finances. The Advisory Perspective Series questions have been modified a bit to take into consideration working with youth.
Keli Calderon holds a Master’s Degree in education from Southern Methodist University and a current Texas teaching certificate. Her 20 years of teaching experience has sharpened her ability to deliver seemingly difficult concepts in an understandable and relatable manner.
Her interest in personal finance came through the process of learning from and correcting many financial missteps from her young adulthood. Keli’s passion to give kids and teens a vision for financial freedom and the tools to get there led her to create The Smart Money Academy. Welcome Keli!
Question 1. What do you enjoy about working with your clients? I love giving kids and teens a vision for a strong future and empowering them with the tools to get there.
Question 2. How would you suggest a potential new client prepare for a 1st meeting? What age groups do you work with? I provide local classes for kids 8 to 14 and I have an online courses for kids 16 and up.
Question 3. When someone agrees to become a client, what can they expect immediately? Over time? What can parents expect their children to learn from your courses. My students come away with an understanding of vital finance vocabulary, the skills to manage their money well, and a hunger to start investing.
Question 4. What is your service philosophy? I think this quote sums it up best. “Prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child.” One of the few ways we can prepare and protect them from life’s surprises is to equip them with the tools to handle whatever life throws at them.
Question 5. What resources do you provide to assist “laypeople” with understanding what is being discussed? How do you help children understand such a complex subject? I utilize my 20 years of classroom experience and curriculum development to make the learning fun, engaging, and approachable. Many of the concepts are taught through games or tied to everyday experiences.
Bonus Question! If you were to relay one piece of advice to anyone reading this, what would it be? It is never too early or too late to start talking to your kids about money management. Be open with them about your successes and failures with money so that they feel comfortable and confident discussing their own money matters.
