Think back to the first day of a new job. Do you remember talking with HR or your supervisor about company policies, being asked to fill out paperwork and making decisions about who you would name as a beneficiary for policies or the number of deductions to take for tax forms?
Did you feel confident and sure of your decisions? Were you given advice/counsel about how to respond when faced with situations necessitating absence?
In that moment of wanting to do well and get started with what was ahead with this job/company, did you even think to ask questions about the “what if times”?
Looking back at my “first days”, it is the excitement of the new road ahead that jumps to mind first and foremost. Yet in hindsight, it is the times as an employee and as a leader of employees when I realize the impact of needing information, assistance and guidance during times of distress that stands out.
We read about company cultures that foster wellness for employees and the impact of engagement on productivity and retention. There are EAP programs to assist employees. Yet, I’ve seen very little activity around “proactive practical life well-being”. This is the paradigm I seek to shift with my proactive work @ The Living Planner.
What if we engaged on behalf of employees at all levels, as a matter of well-being to bring to life a caring culture? Or if we provide the opportunity to focus on the employee as an investment holistically, taking into account the times of distress?
What if we provided during the on-boarding process and beyond, resources about the impact of life events to provide practical guidance and readiness for the “what if’s”? Have you considered the positive ROI implications of increased engagement, motivation and retention?
When we think about bottom line profitability, think first about the employees that are involved with making that happen! Today, I ask you to consider adding a new component to your company and consider what’s possible when we care enough to provide proactive resources for your employees.
