Awareness and Appreciation

May is here and the theme for today is awareness and appreciation. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, ALS Awareness Month and National Military Appreciation Month . This past week was Teacher Appreciation Week and National Nurses Week. And, today is Mother’s Day! It’s a month of recognition!

Mental Health Awareness

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the U.S. since 1949. Every year during the month of May, The National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI) joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health.

They encourage us to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness. People in the US experiencing mental health crisis can call or text 988 to connect with trained counselors 24/7. This is according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration1

ALS Awareness

ALS Awareness Month is a campaign to spread awareness of and raise funds for research for a cure for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Many people know ALS as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the famous baseball player who got the illness and had to retire in 1939 because of it. ALS is a disease that affects the nerve cells that make muscles work in both the upper and lower parts of the body. This disease makes the nerve cells stop working and die.

Military Appreciation

National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May. Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the chance to publicly show their appreciation for troops past and present.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, there are more than 2 million uniformed service members and 2.6 million family members across the globe.1

In May, Military Caregivers more than five million caregivers are honored in the U.S. as they care for more than two million veterans. And on May 13th, children of fallen patriots are recognized for their struggles and sacrifice they’ve experienced. We appreciate you all!

Teacher Appreciation

Now, let’s thank and celebrate teachers, the educators who have made an impact in our lives. Teachers who teach in school, online, or at home, are all vital to our communities. They work hard work and dedicate so much year in and year out for our future generation of leaders. Thank you!

Nurses Week

From assisting with life-threatening ER crises to delivering babies and caring for the elderly in their last moments, nurses perform some of the most difficult and heartbreaking tasks in the medical world. As workers who perform the most essential healthcare tasks, nurses serve as the first point of contact for most patients.

National Nurses Week honors their contributions and sacrifices and reminds us to thank the medical professionals who keep us healthy. It is celebrated between May 6, National Nurses Day, and May 12, the birthdate of celebrated nurse Florence Nightingale.

Mother’s Day

Without mother’s there would be no us ❣️ To mom’s and those who support like mom’s, we recognize you today.
