Caring in the workplace. Caring in life. Caring takes on greater meaning after the past two years. This topic is near and dear to me.
As a boss, one of our most important roles is to foster our employees. Consider how care enters into your workplace as a boss. If you are no longer working, caring for yourself and others is important too 🙂
Follow the Leader
There is something to be said for the saying “follow the leader”. If your leader is caring, you have a role model. If you work in more of a “transactional” environment, personalized communication may be lacking. Get to know yourself as a boss and employee. Are there styles you like more than others?
A Job is More than the Expected
Yes, you may have a job description and know the list of things to be done on the job as an employee. Heads up to the bosses – employees expect to be paid for their time and when provided, the benefits received.
Fostering a caring work environment includes working with your people as people. Bring them in and get to know them. Ask them about their professional aspirations and what tools they need to achieve and develop professionally and personally. Work has meaning when people care.
Ways to Show You Care (as a Boss)
- Set guidelines, provide the tools needed and allow your employees to take ownership of projects. Give employees the latitude to execute. And yes, the feedback loop is important for everyone with this!
- Explain why vs. what. Great discussions about the why behind anything allow employees to take the latitude to execute. Freedom and trust are important components for employees and bosses
- Relay how the employee’s effort impacts the workplace (i.e. team, leaders and organization as a whole)
- Allow employees to create a sense of purpose for customers (internal or external depending on their role) in alignment with overall organizational mission
- Seek ideas from your employees (accept or explain why not)
- Treat each employee fairly. Everyone is different and may respond/react differently to assignments. Treating everyone fairly is key!
- Communicate your expectations and provide feedback (often) to your employees
New Year / New Goals
Was speaking with an amazing business leader this week. She and her team were individually “reflecting” this week about their upcoming year ahead before they meet next week to share the reflections and set the 2022 action plans.
I’m a fan of measurement. And yes, it is possible to measure the impact of caring! ROI can be measured against absenteeism, presenteeism, engagement and more!
Whether you are working or not, reflection time brings clarity and focus to your life. Establishing what you want in life and from life in the coming year helps set the course for the twelve month ahead!
