Change and Loss – A Catalyst

“A person or thing that precipitates an event” is a definition of catalyst. Today, let’s consider change and loss as a catalyst. Why? Often, it takes a disruption at work or home, for us to consider a new approach in life.

Change is inevitable! How often have you heard this? How have you anticipated / prepared “in case”? Changes come in small and big packages – think tweaks vs. overhaul. Catalysts of change include:

  1. When your organization gains or loses a big contract
  2. When a key employee is added or leaves your organization
  3. Regulations / sanctions impact trade
  4. Major revisions in contract, practice or policy are implemented, impacting you
  5. You and/or a loved one receives a serious medical diagnosis
  6. There is a “freak” event (i.e. storm, fire, power outage, shooting) that impacts you, your organization, your loved ones

During my career, I’ve experienced all of the aforementioned examples. Each of these “events” precipitated a response, a reaction by me personally and organizationally.

There has been a key lesson for me. There is no “once and done”!

We often breathe a sign of relief after going through an “event”. We say, “it’s over”! Yes, it is and what has been learned? How may I be prepared differently in the future?

  1. Anticipate change. What’s happened serves as a guide to survey what’s happening elsewhere. Survey impact you’ve experienced and seek ways to prepare for changes.
  2. Prepare for change. Anticipating change is one thing, preparing for change includes action and communication. What are the necessary actions needed and who will be involved with implementation?
  3. Lead change. Anticipation allows us to get out ahead of change. Long-range thinking, planning and preparation is proactive and allows people involved to get out ahead of reactionary change.

Catalysts of change and loss serve us, when we let them. When you are ready to explore ways to anticipate, prepare for and lead change. Let’s talk! We’ll tackle those “life and work issues” with diligence and some fun along the way. Awareness of what’s at stake and what’s to gain is a powerful tool.
