Last week we covered the definition of Digital Assets. It is so easy to open an account online. We do it for shopping, email, business services, social media, banking, investments, apps, books, music, pictures, groceries and more. It gave me cause for pause this weekend. It was time to get busy and create a “Digital Assets Resource Guide”!
What does this mean, you ask?!
After closing out mom’s estate this summer, it was clear the only online account she had was the joint checking account we shared. It was created for the two of us, to make it easy for me to help with her finances after dad died. Because I share the account and created what was paid from it – it is within my knowledge base to close it with ease.
Reviewing my life in comparison made it painfully clear my life is online driven. Many of us are online for personal and business reasons. The number of online accounts we access is staggering. Some we use, some we don’t.
Yes, I have a record of every online account I have. Yes, I maintain user ID’s and passwords for these accounts. Yes, my POA has access to a document that contains all the pertinent data for these accounts. No, I didn’t have an easy resource to show me how to close each of these accounts should I wish to do so when I am living or for my POA to use after I’m gone.
It was time to take action! It’s not always easy to close things out. The time involved with researching all the moving parts from someone’s day to day life can be overwhelming.
Time to “practice what I preach” and chunk it down for everyone. Thus, my weekend project was to create The Living Planner Digital Assets Resource Guide. As of last night, it contains hyperlinks or information for what to do to close an online account for 59 common online accounts. (Suspect this number will continue to grow!)
Hot off the presses! Here is the link to access the new Living Planner
Digital Assets Resource Guide.
Have a look and let us know what you think. If you have comments or accounts to add, let us know! What matters to YOU matters to us.
What other resources would make you day to day living easier? Let us know! Our aim is to make sure you have resources to help you and your families today and into the future.
P.S. My next task is a personalized (expanded) copy listing my individual accounts (my bank, my investment accounts, my utilities, et al!) for me and my POA. If you have any questions about this process or other planning systems contact us via Email or online @ The Living Planner
