Ok gang, it is early November. Veteran’s Day is here. Thanksgiving is on the way. And, in California, we’re literally on fire 🙁 In the blink of an eye, a town in Northern California is reduced to ashes. Thousands received the call to Evacuate. Per It is devastating. In Southern California, a fire jumped the freeway and there are now multiple cities under evacuation order. This has become life.
What have you done to ensure you could get out and carry on in life, if in the blink of an eye, you receive a call to evacuate?
Let’s be practical for the purposes of this post. What could you do this weekend to give yourself a “leg up” as they say?
- Pull out your phone to video and/or take pictures of your place. Go room by room and remember to open the closets, cabinets and drawers. Go to your garage, storage area(s), attic and basement. Remember to include your car, bike, ATV’s all “toys”!
If you need to file an insurance claim, you need proof of what you own/have to begin the process. Yes, it helps if you have proof of purchase (receipts). When it comes to replacing what you have, what you need and what you want, it adds up. If you have a home inventory – fantastic! Be smart – know what you’ve got.
- Policies, yes the actual policies you have. I’m talking about health, auto, life, home, – any/all polices you have in place to “protect” you in case. Do you have electronic copies of your actual policies?
- Personal ID’s prove you are who you are. Make copies of your birth certificate, social security card, drivers license, military id, passport and other documentation proving ownership of your property, car registration and appraisals.
- Contacts are an important element of life. Our phones are a good place to store contact information, yet if others want/need to contact those important to you, could they?
- Online accounts are a part of our daily life. IF you did not have access to the device you access account information, could you sign-in and gain access to your own accounts?
Have you emailed this information to yourself or to others, in case you can’t get to them? Does anyone have access to them, should you need help? It’s a great time to scan, save and email to yourself/others, store securely and/or download to a thumb drive you throw in your bag.
By investing a little time up front, you’ll be as ready as one can ever be, in case the call to evacuate comes. Readiness allows you to be able to react in times of stress and catastrophe. Take care of your business at home, be ready at work for anything life hands you.
Sharing experiences I’ve had and what I’ve learned from them to assist people and businesses is what I love to do.
