Freedom

Memorial Day is observed on Monday 28 May this year.  In 1868 Declaration Day originated the observation of those who fought and died while preserving what our country holds dear – freedom.  Declaration Day was renamed Memorial Day and officially became a federal holiday in the US in 1971.

Veterans and civilians gather on Memorial Day to remember all who gave their lives so we may remember that our freedom has a cost.  For those families who have experienced a loss of a loved one, we stand with you in deep appreciation.

Our freedom and liberties are a precious gift.  American democracy is steeped in the history envisioned by our forefathers.  Preservation of this gift is something to hold onto.

While we enjoy the long weekend, let us remember why this holiday was created.  Freedom means many things to many people.  Self-governance by “free people” included outlining freedom as envisioned by our forefathers in the declaration of independence.  These powerful words are a humble reminder of why we observe those who fought to preserve our freedom this holiday.

“We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new Government, laying its Foundations on such Principles and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to Them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

I stand in humility and appreciation for those we honor Monday.
