How Do We Navigate Through Life?

Honest question, how do we navigate through life? When I started The Living Planner, my reminder of why I was doing this was the saying “navigating the moving pieces of life”. Depending on our age, our experiences, what happens around us; we are always navigating. And an integral part of navigating is communication!

What is navigation? One of the official definitions is, “the process or activity of accurately ascertaining one’s position and planning and following a route”. Keeping this in mind, let’s consider position, planning and route.

Position, Planning and Route

  1. Position
    • Personal Status, (i.e. single, dependents (young/older and do remember pets)
    • Living Status (others in household or those with access to household)
    • Service Providers
  2. Planning
    • Administrative side of life at home and work
      • Who knows what about what you do?
      • Who has access to what you access?
      • What policies do you have?
      • What legal documents have been completed?
      • Where do you file/store important information?
    • Short-term
    • Mid-term
    • Long-term
    • Annual Review (unfortunately, this is not a “once and done” project. ** Things change, laws change, situations change **
  3. Route
    • Organize what you have (home/work)
    • Team of advisors
      • Health (doctors, dentists, veterinarians, health plan)
      • Financial (accounting, banking, money management, stocks, 401K, QRP, SEP, credit, crypto)
      • Legal (business, estate planning)
      • Insurance (agents for auto, property, home, rental, casualty, business, life, long-term care, umbrella, cyber)
      • Your back-ups (those you designate to act on your behalf when you’re not able)

Execution Strategy

Navigating also involves an execution strategy. The team of advisors play a key role along the way for you and for those you’ve selected to be your “back-ups”. Back-ups play an important role and it’s important you share your view about everything so they can act for you (and with legal documents in place) to act as you, if needed.

Communication is key in making your wishes clear to those who matter. This is often overlooked between family, spouses, friends and colleagues. Even when the road ahead has a caution sign – get what you need to proceed and GO!

A friend and amazing communication resource is Debra Woog. She offers a Zoom course, “How to Win-Win Any Difficult Conversation”. I had the privilege of taking it and it changed the way I think about and handle conversations I would prefer to avoid. Her simple, clear steps break things down to get to the heart of what I want out of a conversation, and understand where the other party may be.

With her approach I am reminded to always resolve and speak things that matter to me. She’s a terrific guide to help create intentions, plan for the greatest good of all and practice communicating in ways that allows me to be heard.
