How Routine Impacts Us

What changes have you noticed during this period of #stayhomestay lives period of time? Routine in life for many has been disrupted. Daily routines are personal, unique to each individual.

This disruption allows us to think about what we do, where go, who we see, how we interact. With this, comes an awakening, “ah ha” moments of how routine impacts us physically and mentally.

Routine can help us cope with changes in life, reduce our stress and instill healthy habits. When we have a little structure in our lives, many manage uncertaintly with more confidence. For many, life has changed dramatically.

Working moms and dads may have also become co-teachers for the children’s new online learning environment. Workers who travel for a living have now become workers from home. In-office workers are now remote workers, whether they had previously had a “home office” or not. Retirees are now adjusting to life at home without visitors, outside hobbies/activities or travel plans.

These changes are resetting previous routines and are allowing us the opportunity to creatively build in to our lives new routines to maintain our physical and mental health. Here are some suggestions to consider during this time at home.

  1. Healthy Diet – food choices impact our mood, our physical health and immune systems. Structured meal times and snacks can help everyone adapt to the new schedules within the home environment
  2. Exercise – is this a “solo” or “group” activity for you? Many videos are available on YouTube, Facebook and elsewhere, if it helps to have outside encouragement. The weather is getting nicer, outside walks are possible following your area’s requirements for facial coverings and distancing
  3. Work/School routines – for those with children at home, it’s quite a change for everyone (teachers, students, workers) to incorporate new routines. Practice what works for you all as you all adapt to this “new normal”. Make sure to remember that everyone is adjusting to changes – do remember to keep some humor 🙂
  4. Fun time – what are you all doing for fun time?
  5. Sleep routines are important too! Keeping up a sleep routine is important for our bodies and our minds

Sending appreciation and gratitude to all who are stretched to the limits and heartfelt thoughts to those who have lost loved ones during these times. May we all lean on each other, reach out to one another and feel connection while physically distant.
