During these days/weeks of turbulence all fifty states have been marching. Conversations have been underway about deeper issues that have been “laying low” for many years. 8 minutes and 46 seconds has brought an awareness from the darkness to the light.
All of this led me to search for ways to cultivate an open mind. It’s always been my way to seek first to understand. If we could all seek to remain open minded, might we have a better chance to live in peace with one another, explore ideas we’ve have yet to understand and further growth personally and for the communities in which we live?
Here are four things to try when attempting to embrace new ideas and perspectives:
- Listen more, talk less. Remember that saying, “we have two ears and one mouth for a reason”?! When we listen more and focus upon what the person is saying (without planning our answer!), we take in the perspective of another. This gives us “food for thought”, allowing us to consider what’s been said. Everyone has something to impart – listen and see what you learn.
- Pause, before taking action. When we’re triggered, emotion is high. While it’s tempting to act, thinking through things allows you to take in what was said, obtain details as needed and allow time to consider the outcome you wish to achieve.
- Tactful truth is a gift. When people “hedge” or “spin” or “tell you what you want to hear”, it’s difficult to obtain new ideas and perspectives. Speaking the truth with tact with someone and hearing the truth with tact allows people to act respectfully and engage in conversations in a meaningful way.
- Be curious. An inquisitive nature inspires curiosity and opens up the mind.
Healthy general mental well-being opens up the possibilities for taking in new ideas or examining if old ideas/ways of thinking serve you today. There are always new ways to see the world, look at a problem or seek a solution. When we keep an open mind, we can see new possibilities and explore.
I ask you to consider an aspect of life and business that is typically “put aside”. My work is extensive for people and businesses to explore the various components of what will you do when/if you experience a personal, work or natural disaster? Are you ready, just in case?
This is a great time to review what protection strategies you have in place and identify what’s missing and how best to fill the gaps. If you or someone you know would benefit from working with me individually, for their employees or companies, contact me via Email or check out the website @ The Living Planner for additional information.
Stay safe everyone. –Lynn
