Losing someone you love changes your world. Losing someone in an instant is devastating.
After working crash sites and assisting families after tragedies, my world changed too. I hadn’t realized how complicated it was to handle administrative details we take care of daily, while we are living.
This is the factor that drove me to the work I do now with The Living Planner. Making it easier to take proactive action while we’re living to get what’s needed to prepare for when it’s needed is so important. Sometimes we don’t have the time, nor are we able to make decisions or take the actions that are needed by our families and required by law.
This week was yet another reminder of the fragility of life. Witnessing the events in Atlanta and Boulder we saw people doing “normal” things – a spa day and grocery shopping. Enjoying the day not thinking about tragedy. Instead, enjoying life’s new beginnings in spring as we attempt to come through a pandemic.
How do we process all of this? Grief is not my area of expertise. Yet experiencing tragedies taught me much about grief. The American Counseling Association provides grief and loss resources on their website here: https://www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/mental-health-resources/grief-and-loss-resources
We deserve to grieve when we lose someone vs. worrying about the administrative details we “need to do” in attempt to pick up the pieces and attempt living day to day life again.
Here’s some “life prep” to get started in small steps now.
- Make sure people have access to your home and office and important paper/online account information
- Relay your health care providers and insurance information to a trusted contact
- Document Emergency Contacts as ICE (In Case of Emergency) contacts on your phone
- Update HIPPA information with medical providers
- Get started with overall Contingency Planning for home and work
Let’s make sure you have the information and courage to proceed with developing and implementing plans for you, your families and your work. And this week, reach out to your loved ones. Life is fragile indeed 🙁
