Keeping Track of Online Accounts

How many times during the day do you access an account online, using a user name and password?  Is this such a common occurrence that it doesn’t “register” as something to think about?

In casual conversation I often ask this question when talking with people.  Online accounts are prevalent – we access our personal accounts, we access systems at work, we access social media, we use apps – all day long.  Sometimes the accounts we access are ours alone, other times we share accounts with family members or colleagues.

Let’s consider the impact if we were not able to share what accounts we access or how we access them.  As a personal example, we may pay bills online.  This simplifies our lives and reduces “snail mail” received in a mailbox.  This process works well when we are ready, willing and able to process payments.

Now, let’s think about work.  Access to systems and accounts require a sign-in and password to access an accounting system, a CRM, social media accounts, etc.  Imagine you are the only person to access your data entry or posts.  IF you were away for any reason, without access to the internet, what happens for those who depend on your entries or work?

Of increasing importance in today’s environment is how we secure, protect and maintain security when using online accounts.  When you develop a strategy to provide a way for someone to step into your shoes and secure access to everything you do online, proceed with care.

States are actively involved with establishing internet privacy laws.  The National Conference of State Legislatures website provided a comprehensive review of policies in June, 2017.  If you are interested in learning more, the link is:  NCSL State Internet Privacy
