Kick Off!

Kick off season is here! September is upon us. American football, students back in school, and National Preparedness Month. Of these three, I’ll cover kids going back to school and Preparedness Month today (and, I may be watching football as I write this 😉)

Back to School

September is a time for fresh beginnings as the seasonal changes are here or on the way. School is back in session, affecting students, their families, and the surrounding communities.

The National Safety Council features a safety checklist on its website, which I’m sharing HERE. This list contains some key tips that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year. Other health tips to help your child start this school year strong include:

  • Prioritize healthy routines: sleep, exercise & nutritious meals
  • Stay up-to-date on checkups & immunizations
  • Mental health matters. Watch for sleep changes and physical changes
  • Give and get support

HealthyChildren.org identifies four key building blocks for healthy mental and emotional development on its site that may be helpful for you.

Preparedness

September is National Preparedness Month 2025. The theme for the month is “Preparedness Starts at Home,” encouraging individuals to create family emergency plans, build disaster supply kits, and get involved in preparedness efforts.

Key Actions to Take During National Preparedness Month

  • Know Your Risk: Understand the types of emergencies that could affect your community.
  • Make a Plan: Develop a family emergency plan that addresses your family’s specific needs, including children, seniors, and pets.
  • Build a Kit: Create a supply kit with enough food, water, and other essentials to sustain your household for at least three days after a disaster.
  • Get Involved: Learn basic disaster response skills through programs like Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) or take first aid and CPR classes.
  • Stay Informed: Sign up for local emergency alerts and follow guidance from local officials.

Resources to Help You Prepare

  • Ready.gov:. Offers a toolkit with graphics, information, and tips for National Preparedness Month.
  • FEMA App: Download the FEMA app for Apple or the Google Play Store for disaster alerts and safety information.
  • Local Emergency Management:. Your city or county emergency management agency will have specific information and resources for your area.
  • American Red Cross: Provides information on preparing for emergencies, including specific guidance for pets.
  • Emergency Alerts: You can receive important lifesaving alerts no matter where you are – home, school, or work.
  • Wireless Emergency Alerts
  • NOAA Weather Radio

Why It Matters

Hurricane season ends November 30th. NOAA provides tropical weather updates HERE. Hurricane Katrina was 20 years ago. Watching the coverage meeting with the people impacted then and now is a humble reminder of the impact to people and communities.

  • Readiness Saves Lives: Being prepared helps protect your family and community during emergencies.
  • Build a Culture of Preparedness: Spreading awareness and knowledge about preparedness empowers others to take action.
