Fast Company posted an article this month that caught my eye about leadership. Leadership is defined many ways by many people. How you define it will influence you, your actions and your life.
Working with individuals and businesses, I’ve experienced various leadership styles along the way. When Fast Company posted their article, “4 Ways to Develop Leadership in Everyday Life”, it was the “everyday life” that grabbed me. Considering how we make people feel every day is a form of leadership.
Some components of leadership include:
- Decision-making. Do you intentionally decide or do you prefer decisions are made for you? The old saying goes something like this, you are making a decision when you don’t make a decision! Decide to decide, knowing that new decisions can always be made.
- Interaction with a variety of people. How broad is your world? Do you cultivate interactions with a diverse group of people? Broadening your sphere of people can expand your thinking and open up to new possibilities and creativity.
- We have two ears and one mouth! Listening is a vital component of communication. How often do you listen to hear, really hear? Communication improves dramatically when we listen to hear, vs. listening to respond. There is value in being heard.
- Taking the lead. Know yourself. What are your capabilities, your strengths and weaknesses? Before committing, it is important to follow through for yourself and for those counting on you.
- Managing emotions amidst chaos. Managing emotions in general. How we respond in life often involves taking a “time out” to collect yourself. Words once spoken are hard to retract.
- Keeping a good sense of perspective often involves a good sense of humor!
Are you ready for what life hands you? The importance of leadership is often discussed in the business setting. Everyday life includes business, yet is not exclusively business. Leadership skills can be practiced throughout the day. Explore ways to incorporate leadership throughout the day and see how your day goes!
