A new day and a new month has arrived. It’s May?! As we adapt to this “new normal” of days at home, social/physical distancing when going to the grocery store and taking out the trash, there is another “new normal”. Life and work; work and life are melding into one.
Zoom shows us “real life” of one another. Bookshelves are revealed, dogs and children appear for seconds before being shushed or the feed goes down when internet is interupted! Yes, the physical distancing between our home life and work life has disappeared. Suddenly, we’ve all become people. Real life, not a personna. Real life, humans – doing business with other real life, humans. This is an extraordinary time. One that provides us with a glimpse into others.
I for one, believe this is a real opportunity for us to acknowledge the people side of business. Life and work, work and life have always co-existed. Work culture promotes “leaving your personal life at home”. Yes, work deserves our full attention, as we are participants in a team and clients/customers are our top priority and deserve our full attention.
Yet … there are moments in time when the crossover of life and business occur. This is one of those times. Other times like this are when serious life events occur at home, for us as people/employees, for our nuclear unit; and not for everyone’s nuclear unit. It is in those times when those impacted struggle.
How we are there for each other in a work environment in all times, good and bad, is a sign of our corporate culture and a sign of what we value. This reflects directly to our bottom line, as the first customers we have are our internal customers. How we treat our employees reflects how we treat those who pay our bills, our customers.
Who do you want to be? How would you like to be treated? How do your customers “see you”? These are questions leaders may take forward from these “new normal” times to explore ways to come through this extraordinary time.
Let’s learn from the experiences that are physically separating us and ask how we might proceed with life and work; work and life differently as we proceed. Risks abound in business and in life. Preparation in business and life are sound principles, as this pandemic has taught us.
While we may not know everything that could impact us moving forward, this is a great time to consider what’s in your control to begin now. And that, is where I come in! Let’s get moving to create a roadmap for life and work; work and life to continue on amidst disruptions.
