As you read this post, I’ll be offline enjoying what I call a “nature break”. Summertime is a season I remember fondly during my years living in the Pacific NW. The sun shines, warm days, good friends and blackberries – yes, blackberries! Picking blackberries and making jam soothes my soul.
We live in constant stimuli. Stepping away to recharge is not only good for the soul, it is great for increasing creativity and productivity!
While it might sound counter-intuitive, stepping away can benefit you in the following ways:
- Gaining perspective – daily life consumes us in tasks/action. When we step away we create perspective about what matters to us, what fuels us and how we may participate in ways to support ourselves.
- Letting go – release the need to micro manage. Stepping away is quite instructive. It allows us to see if we have the systems and support to keep things in life afloat when we are not present.
- Recharging – I’ve discovered that energy is better when there are breaks in the action! What I didn’t acknowledge in my 20’s is that life is not a sprint, it is a marathon! Breaks matter …
As with blackberry picking, taking breaks can include thorns. Ouch! Yet the pain is short term in comparison to the longer term benefits of the total experience. How does one take a break – or better yet, a nature break?
- Calendar time for you. Yes, you can incorporate a break into your calendar – try it!
- Open your mind to new thoughts and ideas. Creativity is cultivated, just like the growth of a blackberry. Nuture it!
- Discard worries. Worry is something we create. Facing what’s in our control and what’s not serves us well as we go through life.
- Taking care of you, takes care of many. Self-care goes a long way for your overall health and endurance. Knowing this and acting upon it is a great priority to have!
Whether you prefer urban or rural settings – getting out and enjoying time off the clock, is time well spent! Happy Summer!
