Online Risks at Home and Work

Today’s life includes frequent use of technology. Smartphones, tablets and the “old fashioned” PC/Mac are a constant in our days. What are online risks at home and work and how may we prepare for them?

Let’s question ourselves on a personal level and a professional level today. Cyber attacks are a problem globally. Cities and infrastructure systems are being held hostage by intruders seeking a payout.

Two Florida cities have paid ransoms this week to regain access to their data. If you haven’t read about this, here is a link highlighting what’s happening https://www.zdnet.com/article/second-florida-city-pays-giant-ransom-to-ransomware-gang-in-a-week/

Unfortunately for us, even when IT staff identify the problem quickly, the culprits had taken over systems through the use of ransomware. In 2018, ransomware hit the British National Health Service purging appointments and costing the government approximately £100m .

If you think about it, we are all now what we used to think was the internet. We’re the ones sharing data and information as a matter of course.

People and businesses conduct financial transactions, store personal data, research and communicate via technology. Risks have skyrocketed with the development of sophisticated data intrusion methods of third parties.

How do we protect ourselves, our systems and our data allowing us to use technology to its advantage?

  1. Continuous security checks – i.e. protect our devices/systems with security programs and update these programs regularly
  2. Observe, assess and report any incidents – i.e. notice the blocked attacks on your devices and take precautions
  3. Back-up your data regularly – i.e. ongoing backup systems allow you to restore to a previous point in time, if ever needed
  4. Communicate to everyone – i.e. family talks and corporate sessions in every department to heighten awareness

The creativity of cyber criminals often surpasses our diligence in protecting our information. We pop onto networks, stream information, share pictures on social media and buy things at the spur of the moment.

Guard yourself and access to your information with vigor. Include your smart devices in your protection plan. Pay attention to the networks you join away from secure home and work networks. Prying eyes are everywhere …

Now is a good time to pursue some proactive steps to care for your future at home and work. When you’re ready for a second set of eyes, let’s talk. We’ll tackle those “life and work issues” with diligence and some fun along the way. Awareness of what’s at stake and what’s to gain is a powerful tool.
