Talking about accidents, illness or even death is not something that comes naturally for most. Amidst the diagnosis, situation or aftermath, there are a number of practical concerns that come at us all at once. Often we are ill-prepared for the practical needs, as we struggle to get through the day. There comes a time when the practical takes center stage and action is needed.
Preparing for the practical involves a willingness to consider what we leave behind for those who will step into our shoes should the time come when we can’t speak for ourselves or a loved one needs our help at a critical time. Yes, this is a consideration at home and at work.
De-sensitizing this topic and evaluating what, how, when and why things matter comes with awareness, advocacy and education. When speaking to industry sectors, community groups, and families, creating “ah ha” moments around day to day activities is my goal. Little things matter. What we do, how we do it and the people with whom we interact is known to us individually. If someone needed to step into my shoes, how might I make this easier for them, is a question I ask to prompt discussion and begin small action steps.
At home and at work evaluate what you do daily and how this may impact others if you were not here. The “stuff” we do without thinking about it is often what reaps havoc upon others if we are not able to convey details to help them.
While we cannot control when or how “life happens”, we are able to control what we leave behind. “The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins With a Single Step” –LaoTzu
