Protect Against Tax Identity Theft

It’s that time of year again … tax time!  Assembling what we have earned and spent the year before is upon us to complete the requisite tax filings.

Fraudsters seek to enter this season by obtaining names, social security numbers and other personal information to obtain a refund.  If they “beat us to the punch”, we remain unaware until a computer rejects our real return.  This is significant; as it impacts our receipt of a legitimate refund and correcting the problem can take months.

There are some ways to protect yourself against tax identity theft to consider as you file this year.

  1.  Be careful with your personal information at home and in your business.  Shred all documents containing personal information.  Carelessness with the handling of snail mail, account information and passwords can come back to hurt you
  2. Ensure you have strong online passwords – really strong and mix them up.  Using a variety of passwords with your email addresses can help protect you.  Should someone gain access to one password, your account risk is lower
  3. Complete your return on a secured server, on a secured WIFI and avoid the temptation to use WIFI on the go when you cannot verify security
  4. Be alert to scammers posing as the IRS – via phone, email or text
  5. Be cautious when clicking on links that appear to be from online tax preparation firms or the IRS.  Instead go to the site directly.  Phishers/scammers use links to gain access to your information
  6. Check with your tax preparation providers about their cybersecurity precautions.  When you are communicating online with them to submit your documents, ask how they are protecting your information
  7. Ask your tax preparation provider about how quickly they file your return in conjunction with paying taxes.  If extensions are filed on your behalf, how is your information protected?
  8. If you encounter tax fraud, act fast!  The IRS has information to help.  Click here to obtain information from them Taxpayer Guide to Identity Theft
