Ready or Not … Extreme Weather Prep

Extreme weather has become a norm in the US and across the globe. Electing to to ready, or not is a choice. Let’s talk practicality and review some tips and tricks for your home and workplace.

We’ve seen the devastation from Hurricane Dorian – winds, tornado, power outages, flooding. Fires and earthquakes in the west. A severe weather website from Ready.gov reports conditions and provides helpful tips: https://www.ready.gov/severe-weather

When I read through the “make a plan” section provided by Ready.gov there are helpful tips. Let’s expand the tips and think about your day to day life to assess ways for you, your family and your business to get up and running if impacted. Create a “stash kit” to include:

  1. Water, water, water for you and each person in your home or workplace. Water is essential to health and our bodies require water intake to function. Access to clean drinking water can be impacted after extreme weather. Maintaining a supply of water in case of emergency can be a life saver. Recommended a gallon a day per person, minimum and more to include for pets!
  2. Non-perishable food supplies are also recommended. Examples include: canned goods; crackers; trail mix; dried fruit; protein bars; nut butters; non refrigerated food/drinks and remember pet food for pets. Do check expiration dates every so often and make sure to have a can opener!
  3. Medication and supplements – remember to include any prescription/non prescription medication in your stash kit!
  4. First Aid and daily hygiene care are important too! A first aid kit to include scissors and/or a swiss army knife are helpful to cut tape, gauze, etc. Antibiotic ointments, hydrogen peroxide or cleaning agent, band aids, tape and gauze along toothpaste, liquid soap, baby wipes and hand sanitizers are great to keep on hand!
  5. Let there be light! Flashlights, batteries, candles and matches can help keep light in case of power outages.
  6. Comfort counts! Having access to blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, air mattresses can be a godsend. During warm weather months, it’s tough to stay cool without power. Washcloths and extra water may help, if there is no access to a generator.
  7. Extra shoes and protective gear are important. Be aware of your surrounding – glass, debris and downed trees and power lines are dangerous. Make sure you have sturdy shoes and protective clothing.
  8. Tools to help you turn off gas lines, water, et al. Battery operated radio with batteries and having a solar power source to keep smartphone power when we lose power is important too – we want to keep informed!
  9. Duct tape is good for many things! I learned long ago that keeping duct tape nearby can be valuable!

When you are ready to explore ways to anticipate, prepare for and implement specific home and work place action plans, let’s talk! We’ll tackle those “life and work issues” with diligence and some fun along the way. Awareness of what’s at stake and what’s to gain is a powerful tool.
