What does it mean to be step-in ready? It is different for each of us.
When you think about you and your current circumstances ask yourself this. If someone needed to come in and help you today, could they?
Who are Your People?
Your people will be the ones with whom you will share sensitive information and talk about tough topics. They are those you trust and will have your back. These are the people we are thankful to have in our lives.
If this is something new for you to consider, ask yourself who you would/could call anytime of day or night knowing they would pick up? Always know that these people may change over the years as life changes for you. Keep in mind that having your people is a responsibility for you and them.
Your people may live with you, nearby or at a distance. Depending on your circumstances, even when you live under the same roof, it’s a good idea to have backups for your backups. If you travel, if they travel, or if something impacted both of you, then who?
Having your people is particularly important when young children (under 18) and / or pets are living with you, and for those who are “flying solo” who don’t have live-in back-ups. Select people who work well under pressure, communicate well, will respect your wishes , and is someone you can count on.
Online Accounts
January, 2023 has not been kind to online account holders. We’ve learned of new instances of account breaches.
22 days into 2023 and look at these data breaches below. Yikes! Because of this, Online accounts take a high priority for you being step-in ready!
Forbes reported that 34,942 PayPal accounts were breached. The account owners “should have” been notified. If you have a PayPal account, sign in and see if your password has been reset.
TMobile was breached again. On January 20, 2023 it was reported that 37 Million accounts were impacted from November 25, 2022 until the breach was discovered January 5, 2023. The initial report on ABCNews.go says many accounts did not impact the “full data set” (meaning some personal data was taken, yet not .
Tech Radar reported that MailChimp had a data breach January 11, 2023. All impacted accounts were contacted (thankfully not me!) and suspended accounts while they investigated the breach.
The Guardian reported January 5, 2023 that hackers breached Twitter email addresses and phone numbers of 200+ Million account users.
Norton LifeLock and LastPass (popular password managers) reported breaches too. Norton reported that approximately 925,000 active and inactive accounts were compromised between 1-21 December, 2022. The LastPass breach impacted customer account information and vault data. They’ve had trouble with breaches since 2011 per CNET.
Online accounts are a blessing and a curse. We love them, and so do others. Your job is to protect yourself as much as possible and make sure that those you choose to be your “back-ups” know what you’ve done to protect your information.
If you currently use a password manager, make sure to secure your account with multi-factor authentication. For all online accounts, make sure you are keeping up with every account’s login information including your user name, your password, your security questions and additional authentication measures.
** And, update this information along the way for you and your back-up people!
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
One of the traditions of Chinese New Year is giving red envelopes (Hongbao) with lucky money inside to bestow luck and happiness to the recipient. Older people (Parents) give red envelopes to younger (children) after a reunion dinner.
Today begins Chinese New Year. It is the Year of the Rabbit! The Year of the Rabbit 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope and peace, with the Rabbit symbolizing wealth and prosperity.
