As we explore the human aspect of work, let me remind you that today in the US, we “spring ahead”! Yes, it is that day of the year when an hour of our day goes “poof”! Happy Sunday!
One Size Does Not Fit All
Two years ago, we learned of a global pandemic. This pandemic as of this week has resulted in the loss of 966,746 reported deaths in the US and over 6 Million worldwide. These numbers are staggering 😞
The human aspect of work comes into play for all organizations. This week I attended a seminar sponsored by Care.com focused on benefit offerings in the workplace. The multi-generational aspect of workers was mentioned and I’ve been pondering this all week.
The reason one size does not fit all relates back to us as humans in different life stages. Those starting their careers vs. those who are 10, 20, 30, and 40 years in have different priorities in life and with work.
From new entrants into the workplace to those nearing retirement, interests and needs vary. Planning for finances, insurance, health and care needs for each stage is different.
The human aspect of work includes understanding employee needs at different life stages. Building, refining and teaching skills varies by age too. Organizations who plan for multi-generations have an advantage in today’s competitive job market.
Flexibility Matters
Flexibility pertaining to where you work and the hours you work are more important now than ever. Changing up where you work may not be easy for employers or employees. Having flexible hours is a godsend in times of emergency.
Reflecting back as a leader of people and as an employee, I’ve given and been given time to deal with family emergencies. Care benefits for the stages in life are more available today than back in my day! When you’ve experienced challenges involving family members, you know how significant flexibility is for workers.
Do you ask for help when you’re facing a situation in life or work or are you one who “goes it alone”? Is your work environment conducive for obtaining help?
Workplace cultures that foster interaction and development of people at all ages and stages of life makes a big difference in productivity and retention. The human aspect matters more than you may know.
Keeping it Real
There is chaos all around us. From the pandemic to the war in Ukraine, life has been unstable. Finding calm amidst uncertainty can be quite a feat these days.
Go easy on yourself and know that what is “in the now” is certain to change. This may provide comfort, or be even more unsettling.
Know yourself and if it’s easier to “turn off the world”, do it. If you are someone who likes to be informed, check your sources. As we are in a 24/7 news cycle across various platforms/apps and stations, it is essential to verify sources and their authenticity.
