The Living Planner Advisory Perspective Series – Fitness in 2016

And, here we are.  A New Year, 2016 is here!  Have you set intentions for your year?  If you are like many, health and fitness may be at the top of your list.  The Living Planner Advisory Perspective Series features professionals who serve us in living our best lives.

Let’s kick off 2016 with an Advisory Perspective Series featuring a business owner who has taken her education, training and passion and created a company serving clients 50+ who wish to live healthy and fit lifestyles for years to come!

Award-winning entrepreneur, Lisa Harris has more than 30 years experience as a Registered Dietitian, and has been certified as a Personal Trainer with a specialty in Senior Fitness by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) since 2013.  She has a B.S. in Dietetics from UC Davis, a Masters in Foods and Nutrition from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and a certificate in Exercise Science/Fitness Instructor from UC San Diego.  A freelance writer and public speaker, she is also a certified Geri-Fit® instructor and licensee (exercise classes for older adults). In addition to classes, Lisa provides individual fitness training and nutrition coaching in the privacy of her clients’ homes. She has lived in the Temecula-Murrieta area with her husband, Terry, since 1996.  When not busy walking or working out at the gym, Lisa enjoys gardening, reading and playing with her two grandchildren!

Question 1. What do you enjoy about working with your clients?
I love seeing folks over 50 gain strength and confidence over the course of our meetings together. They build self-efficacy, the belief that they can successfully engage in physical activity, and that opens countless doors to fitness!
Question 2. How would you suggest a potential new client prepare for a 1st meeting?
Think about why they truly want to start with a fitness program. It takes a lot of commitment to change your lifetime, and that’s what’s involved with the kind of program I have.
Question 3. When someone agrees to become a client, what can they expect immediately? Over time?
Immediately, they can expect specific strategies to improve fitness. I recommend the use of a pedometer or fitness tracker to become aware of movement throughout the day, and to begin to improve that. We start with twice weekly strength building sessions, and develop a plan to optimize food intake according to their specific needs. Over time, we develop goals and ways to overcome obstacles. We tweak the program as needed for their success.
Question 4. What is your service philosophy?
Given motivation and proper guidance, everyone over 50 can increase their self-sufficiency.
Question 5. What resources do you provide to assist “laypeople” with understanding what is being discussed?
I provide a food plan, if needed, and will analyze my clients’ nutritional intake. I print reports from organizations and websites I trust, so that clients begin to make sense of the myriad of food and exercise info they encounter. I have a monthly fitness blog they receive.
