What I Learned From a Recent Conversation

While updating all online accounts in my name this month, I had an interesting conversation with a customer service representative at Starbucks. You see, I’ve been a Starbucks Gold Member since 1992! I called to ask what would be involved to notify them of the death of an account holder.

This amazing customer service representative was taken aback – she had not had this inquiry before and wanted to ask how I was. She was relieved to learn I am alive, well and merely curious as to how I could make this easier for those who have been designated to “clean up” after I’m gone.

After a brief hold while she spoke with her supervisor, I learned what they require. We talked and laughed about the nature of this call. She inquired as to why I was doing this now? We had a wonderful conversation about the advantages of talking about and preparing life’s practical stuff while we are healthy, thus having information ready for those who will take care of things when we’re gone.

She asked me if I conducted workshops about this and how she could learn more. Her willingness to considering the what if’s, made my day! And, it could be an opportunity to go onsite for a workshop!

Funny thing about this was that I learned conversations about a topic we typically avoid can occur, when we’re willing. And, I now have clear direction to pass along about how to handle a Starbucks account when the time comes. Win-Win!

Our lives involve so many outside variables. People, processes, service providers that are online and offline. Learning about the labrynix of details in the lives all of us lead is something best undertaken a little at a time. When we are amidst an emotional time, it’s so darned difficult to handle.

If you’re willing to consider diving into this topic that will touch everyone of us, our families, our employees and our colleagues, it would be an honor to map out steps we can take care of while we are living to make life just a little easier for those we leave behind.

2020 is a good year to address life in a proactive way. Feel free to drop me a line via Email to ask questions and learn how I work with people and companies. Additional information is available on the website @ The Living Planner
