Are You Teachable?

Exploring new places, people, concepts, things is part of my DNA! This week, the word “teachable” came into my mind. I immediately asked myself what does it take to be teachable. Thus, I ask you, are you teachable?

Is this what it takes? Or is there more?

The morning teachable popped into my mind, I was on my way to meet a man I met through a LinkedIn connection. He consults companies, cities, organizations and educational institutions about disaster recovery. We were meeting to converse about our strategies to bring awareness of personal responsibilities we all (organizational and personal) have and how we build momentum for proactive steps, vs. the horrific reactive situations so many in the US face currently.

It may have been the seriousness of the conversation we were having. Or the impact disasters have on communities, people and organizations. Or the resistance so many express about taking action in advance of a serious situation.

This dear man was subject to my musings about being teachable … and to his credit, he was patient and contemplative 🙂 Is being teachable a combination of self-awareness, mindfulness. EQ and being open-minded? Or was I missing the bigger picture?

On a quest for answers …

Searching for references to the word teachable, I found an article written by Mihai Herman https://www.stevenaitchison.co.uk/6-ways-develop-maintain-teachable-attitude/ referencing 6 ways to develop and maintain a teachable attitude asking how open we are to receiving new information. How do we become open to accept new perspectives and adopt new habits to allow them to “stick”? Here is a listing of points referenced in the article I intend to use as a guide for me.

  • are aware of your strengths and weaknesses
  • seek help
  • accept that other’s opinion might be better than yours
  • take notes
  • learn from criticism
  • take responsibility for your failures and seek lessons to learn
  • read books and seek answers
  • focus on solutions
  • live a conscious life and learn from all kinds of situations
  • are so aware that you learn from other people’s mistakes – this is next level!
  • love to get out of your comfort zone
  • love to try something new
  • admit when you’re wrong
  • are open to doing things in a totally different way
  • are confident in changing your routine
  • have a mentor or you are looking for one
  • ask questions and have a curious attitude
  • are aware that you don’t know everything and you are open to learning

Electing to be “teachable” is an option in this crazy world of information coming to us from a variety of sources. Gathering facts and practical information is another one of “my things”. Sorting it all out in ways that allow new information to come in is a part of being teachable.

Yes, there are serious situations we face in life. If you’re ready to be free from the uncertainty and wish to pursue some proactive steps to care for your future at home and work, let’s talk.
