Productive Activities in Uncertain Times

As we change our day to day lives, let’s ponder some productive activities in uncertain times. Limiting social activities and implementing social distancing, I’d like to encourage you to take care of a few “to do’s” in order to get organized on the home front.

But first, take a moment to breathe in and out. This is an unusual time. Seek facts from the sources I listed last week (The WHO and CDC) along with individual state resources is important as this is an ever changing public health situation.

Ok, here are three specific productive activities for you to organize or create during these uncertain times.

  1. Have medical information for you and your loved ones within reach, should it become necessary to access and / or share it quickly
    • Health Insurance policy(s)
    • Medications taken with doseage
    • Medical history inclusive of conditions, past surgeries and anything under the “watchful eye” of a physician
    • Allergies to medicine, food, topical lotions/ointments
    • Blood type – especially if you have an unsual blood type like me (O Negative)!
  2. Legal documents
    • Will/Trust
    • Power(s) of Attorney (Health, Finances, Durable, Digital Assets (Intellectual Property)
    • Advanced Directive / Health Proxy
    • Guardianship
    • Special Needs Trust
    • Contracts (Business / Personal, Loans, etc.)
  3. Online / General Information
    • Lists of any online account requiring a user name/password/security questions
    • Business / Personal Insurance Policies

Starting with these three will help you tremendously if you live near or far from loved ones. If you or someone you love needs attention, having information at your fingertips helps you respond quickly. If you’d like me to email you the forms I created and use for myself to record my medical history, policies and online accounts, contact me directly via Email.

This is a also an opportunity to enjoy connecting with others via phone, text, social media or snail mail. Enjoy the time to get through your mail (complete your census!); catch up with reading; binge watch shows; be creative in the kitchen; enjoy hobbies long forgotten; or sleep! Early spring cleaning was on my list yesterday – felt good to scrub down in light of the current situation.

Chinese philosophy that crises represents both danger and opportunity.

Consider reviewing the “if – then” scenarios for home and work to help you prepare and/or craft a “to do list”. Who are people you could call upon for help if needed? Do you have what you need in case you can’t get out?

This is a different, yet similar process to preparation for a tornado, hurricane, earthquake or fire. Focus on what’s essential vs. desired, if life was disrupted. This helps our minds organize in advance of anything.

We are a community of humans. Stay alert. Look after yourself. Help others if you are able. Get good sleep.
