After 20 years without an earthquake above a 6.0 magnitude, Southern California has experienced two. It seems to be a perfect time to remind us all about the Drop, Cover and Hold On instructions officials have created for us.
Because of the location of the quakes, on 4 July a 6.4 magnitude and on 5 July a 7.1 magnitude shook throughout California, Las Vegas and beyond. Ridgecrest is not a major metropolitan area. The impact to the community and surrounding cities has been profound. Geologists, emergency personnel and the community are working together to assess the situation and provide assistance to all.
Earthquakes are not just for Californians. The Geological Survey (USGS) team has an interactive map on their website you may find helpful: https://usgs.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5a6038b3a1684561a9b0aadf88412fcf And, earthquakes happen globally – here is a link to the latest earthquakes around the world: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/
Technology is playing a role today. I signed up for the beta of an early warning app last year. This system is from a partnership of several institutions: USGS; Cal OES; CalTech; Universities; the city of Los Angeles, the state of Oregon and more.
The USGS will issue public warnings of potentially damaging earthquakes and provide warning parameter data to government agencies and private users on a region-by-region basis, as soon as the ShakeAlert System, its products, and its parametric data meet minimum quality and reliability standards in those geographic regions. The USGS set the goal of beginning limited public notifications in late 2018 at the magnitude 5.0 level through alerting pathways that are fastest enough to be effective.
In the longer term, ShakeAlert availability will expand geographically to ANSS regional seismic networks with sufficient seismic instrumentation to support timely alerts. For further information or to sign up for the beta testing, https://earlywarninglabs.com/mobile-app/
